Welcome to the community forum for digital opportunity!
We’re looking forward to reading your comments and suggestions on how our community members can make the most of our growing broadband access.
The themes below emerged from six stakeholder discussions this summer. You can read more about those in the links below.
Projects commonly proposed within each theme are included to draw the line from the vision of growing the region’s ability to fully mine the possibilities of expanded broadband access to how we can make that happen.
The challenges and solutions listed here are not all-inclusive; more are included in the session summaries. Your additions and comments on these and other ideas are very welcome - as you scroll down, you'll see the tools that enable you to add your thoughts.
Emerging Themes
1.1. Challenge: Subscriptions are expensive for income-constrained residents and small businesses; many suggest $20-60 is an affordable cost
1.2. Solution: subsidized subscriptions
1.3. Solution: A sliding scale price structure
1.4. Solution: Public access at community centers and gathering spaces
2.1. Challenge: accessing online education
2.2. Solution: providing devices to students (not just K-12!)
3.1. Challenge: Devices become obsolete.
3.2. Challenge: Users often don’t have the skills to use them well.
3.3. Solution: Refurbished devices could be redistributed – PC Land is currently
providing this service. More partners could have a bigger impact.
3.4. Solution: Training on using devices at community centers and libraries (see training for more information)
4.1. Challenge: Residents struggle to access sites, complete forms, and find reliable information
4.2. Solution: Training and information for website creators & updaters to build better, more accessible sites
4.3. Challenge: Knowing how to use a device and software for internet access & troubleshooting problems
4.4. Solution: Tech support for specific populations (aging population, individuals with disabilities) – Libraries and community service organizations offer one-on-one support, but more partners, locations are needed.
5.1. Challenge: Users can be taken in by scams, phishing, and other predatory online practices
5.2. Solution: Education and training sessions to arm residents with ways to protect themselves. Some participants mentioned that police departments/sheriffs offer monthly meeting opportunities as well as senior center activities.
6.1. Challenge: making users technology and internet-savvy – the terminology, changing technology, and continual device upgrades make it difficult to get started and keep up
6.2. Solution: Education, training sessions, and one-on-one support can build skills and confidence. Creative partnering with groups and those who know for those who don’t could build community connection and information sharing.
7.1. Challenge: Receiving timely and specialized health care is not always a local solution or easy to access in person (especially with transportation challenges for some).
7.2. Solution: Getting patients connected to resources and initiating telehealth services through training/sign-up.
7.3. Solution: Ensure adequate devices, with training and privacy space, are available to users who need them.
8.1. Challenge: Some of these ideas are already implemented in the community (or could be), but are heavily dependent on capacity or availability, or successful awareness of programs’ existence.
8.2. Solution: Identifying willing partners (in progress!) to provide pieces of the puzzle: training and education coordination, expertise, meeting space, etc.
9.1. Challenge: How do we get these ideas started (partners and funding) and keep things going?
9.2. Solution: Build partnerships across the community
9.3. Solution: identify diverse and continuing funding sources and staffing solutions
