What's Up With Crystal Springs?

Why is Crystal Springs being included within the larger Parks & Recreation Masterplan?

As a natural area, the Town of Wytheville Parks & Recreation has taken a particular interest in what the community thinks the best use of the resource will be over the coming years. With this in mind, utilizing the framework set forth by the Town of Wytheville Parks and Recreation Master Plan, we are taking the opportunity to imagine what the future of the Crystal Springs Recreation Area looks like.

History

The land that now makes up Crystal Springs Recreation Area was originally preserved to protect Wytheville’s water supply. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Town of Wytheville acquired approximately 1,800 acres south of town to safeguard the watershed and a reservoir was constructed on the property to serve as a municipal water source for the growing community.

Although the reservoir was eventually too small to remain the town’s primary water supply, the protected land continued to serve an important environmental role. Over time, the forests, streams, and wetlands surrounding the reservoir became valuable habitat for wildlife and aquatic life.

Recognizing the recreational potential of the area, the Town began developing the property for public use in partnership with the Wythe-Bland Community Foundation and the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.

Today

Today, Crystal Springs Recreation Area serves as both a preserved watershed and a vibrant outdoor recreation space for residents and visitors. A growing trail network winds through hardwood forests, along mountain streams, and across ridge tops.

Visitors will find opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, primitive camping, and picnicking throughout the property.

Crystal Springs is also home to a Kids in Parks TRACK Trail, an interactive outdoor learning program that encourages families to explore nature together. Through the Kids in Parks TRACK Trails initiative, interpretive signs, observation equipment, and self-guided activity brochures help children discover the birds, aquatic life, and ecosystems found throughout the area.

A mountain bike terrain park has also been added to the recreation area. Designed to blend with the natural landscape, the park incorporates boulders, slopes, and natural features to create riding challenges for both beginner and advanced riders while minimizing environmental impact.
